EPR LABORATORY

Laboratory of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

.
Head of the Lab: dr hab. * Bartłomiej Ciesielski*
The research topic:

Dosimetry of ionizing radiation by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance – EPR

Research conducted in the Department of EPR concerns the quantitative characteristics of stable free radicals generated in matter by ionizing radiation. In biological materials (tooth tissues, bones, nails, hair) retaining the EPR signal generated by radiation the measurement of signal intensity allows ex-vivo determinations of absorbed doses of ionizing radiation. This research technique is an important, complementary technique to other methods of biodosimetry.
The EPR biodozymetry in tooth enamel played an important role in documentation of the doses absorbed by victims of nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as by population of people from regions affected by the Chernobyl accident. Recently, EPR measurements of bone and nail samples have been used to determine the doses in victims of radiation accidents in radiation therapy and in industrial applications of radioactive isotopes.
The EPR Lab of the Department of Physics and Biophysics has been actively participating in international comparative EPR dosimetry programs for many years

Two bachelor’s theses, seven master’s theses, seven PhD theses and one habilitation were completed so far in the field of EPR dosimetry in the EPR Lab of the Department
