Transforming Nursing Data into Structured Clinical Knowledge Resources
This project focuses on transforming nursing data into structured clinical knowledge resources. It is being conducted within the activities of the Scientific Research Laboratory established under the Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB) programme and in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Pomeranian Center for Digital Medicine (IP_CMC).
The project’s objective is to develop innovative methods for utilizing clinical data in scientific research and to strengthen the capacity of the Medical University of Gdańsk in the field of digital medicine. By integrating expertise in nursing, health sciences, and medical informatics, the project contributes to the development of advanced approaches for clinical data analysis, supporting both research activities and evidence-based clinical practice.
The Department of Coordinated Care at the Medical University of Gdańsk (GUMed) participates in the international E4N.EU project, which aims to develop innovative tools supporting nursing education and preparing future nurses for work in a digitally enabled healthcare environment.
The core component of the project is the e4Nursing platform, developed by the Nursing School of Porto (Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto, Portugal). The platform integrates the NursingOntos ontology and the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®), enabling students and educators to create care plans, analyze clinical decision-making processes, and develop clinical competencies within a digital learning environment.
The project addresses challenges related to the digital transformation of healthcare systems and the implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). By applying ontology-driven approaches, the platform supports the standardization of nursing documentation, semantic interoperability of healthcare data, and the development of competencies required for modern digital health systems.
Polish Partners
In Poland, the project is implemented by three medical universities:
Medical University of Gdańsk (GUMed)
Medical University of Lodz (MUL)
Medical University of Warsaw (WUM)
The activities are conducted under the auspices of the ICN Accredited ICNP® Research and Development Centre at the Medical University of Lodz, which coordinates the translation and validation of the NursingOntos ontology and supports the implementation of ICNP® standards in nursing education and practice.
Activities at GUMed
Within the project, the Department of Coordinated Care is involved in:
translation and validation of NursingOntos concepts,
implementation of the e4Nursing platform into nursing education,
development of clinical learning scenarios,
strengthening digital competencies among nursing students,
evaluation of the platform and preparation of research activities related to ontology-based nursing practice and clinical data utilization.
Project Impact
The E4N.EU project helps nursing students acquire future-oriented competencies, including:
working with Electronic Health Records (EHRs),
applying standardized nursing terminologies,
analyzing clinical data,
making digitally supported clinical decisions.
Through participation in this initiative, the Medical University of Gdańsk contributes to the advancement of digital nursing education and supports the development of interoperable healthcare information systems across Europe.
