Background/ Research activities
Maciej Tankiewicz, Ph.D., Eng., university professor, specialist in the field of environmental, holder of a habilitation degree in health sciences, and chemical engineer. He heads of a Bachelor environmental health program.
His research combines environmental health, toxicology, analytical chemistry, and human biomonitoring. His studies focus on the impact of air, water, food, and indoor environmental pollutants on health, with particular emphasis on pesticides, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and complex chemical mixtures.
He has led the NCN PRELUDIUM and SONATA projects and currently leads the GUMed team in the international LIGHT project (See more). He also participates in the activities of the ACE²-EU Alliance in the areas of One Health and the impact of climate change on health. He combines his scientific work with the safety assessment of building materials, finishing materials, and interior furnishings, as well as the issuance of GUMed hygiene certificates. He actively participates in initiatives related to public spaces, including adapting cities to climate change and improving residents’ quality of life.
He is a member of the Polish Society of Environmental Medicine, the Polish Chemical Society, the Polish Toxicological Society, and the Gdańsk Scientific Society.

The Division of Environmental Toxicology performs laboratory and field studies related to the chemistry and environmental ecotoxicology of various inorganic and organic pollutants in outdoor and indoor air, water, sediments, soil, and their impact on ecosystem and human health. Understanding the processes involved in the interaction of pollutants with the environment is essential in prevention, reduction and mitigation of their human and ecotoxicological impact. In our studies we use a combination of analytical methods (GC-MS, GC-MS-MS, HPLC, LC-MS-MS), bioassays (YES-YAS, ELISA, etc.), ecotoxicological tests (Microtox) and chamber techniques. We also educate students and young scientists in the field of environmental chemistry and health assessment.
